Wild Days, DeZuniga Nights

I was rooting around the internet for Tony DeZuniga stuff the other day, as you do, when I stumbled across these images for a comic entitled Wild Days. I was surprised that I had never heard of it, and thought for a moment that they might be pages from his upcoming Jonah Hex graphic novel, but it turns out they’re from indie publisher A First Salvo.

I can’t tell if A First Salvo is still a going concern, and if they are whether they’re still considering publishing Wild Days, but it would be a damn shame if a Tony DeZuniga western was left out in the cold, especially one that looks as promising as this.

I really dig how the detail of the large figure leaves the drawing as your eye moves down. Very, very interesting…
Have you checked out Hex #50 with Darwyn Cooke? I always feel a little let down when I read his Hexs’, but I think it’s just because my expectations of awesomeness are so high.

I collect the trades for Jonah Hex, so I won’t be reading #50 for awhile. I wasn’t sure about the first Cooke issue, but it’s grown on me. I got a chance to see some originals from it, and also found out how Cooke came on board. Apparently he told them he’d consider drawing an issue, but only if they wrote a script according to completely random demands of his, including setting it in Canada and having drunken, corrupt Mounties as villains. He didn’t figure they would ever call his bluff.
The best issues by far, according to me, Cooke, and Palmiotti at least, are the ones by Jordi Bernet. They’re my favourite comics coming out of Marvel and DC right now. Fucking incredible stuff.
