The Children of the Hydra’s Teeth

I’m back from Montreal and Paris, so obviously I have reanimated skeletons on my mind.

Even I forget the reanimated skeleton from time to time. Unlike vampires, zombies, werewolves and other more popular monsters, it’s not as if anyone is going to devote a book entirely to warrior skeletons. Or will I? Other monsters are implausible, but with a little fudging, possible. Reanimated skeletons don’t even have muscles. How the fuck do you explain that? Magic!

Illustration from Donjon: Clefs en Mains, because the French understand the difference between a normal reanimated skeleton and an armed reanimated skeleton.

Does the Grim Reaper count? I had this idea for gag strip involving the Grim Reaper for that Wasted mag, but never got it together. Lots of Dia de los Muertos imagery, laughing at crumpled bodies of the innocent. Ho ho ho.

A Bill Mauldin-style working GI thing for skeleton warriors would also have a lot of potential, I think.

Count as an reanimated skeleton? That’s a question for the ages. I’m leaning towards ‘no’, based around the idea that the Grim Reaper is so much more powerful than a regular reanimated skeleton. Crack out your Monster Manuals!

And I agree with your Bill Mauldin suggestion, but I’m for adding Mauldin to anything.
