Tiger Style

After a lengthy lull I’m finally easing my way back into animating, and to loosen up I’ve pulled out my Shaw Bros. collection and immersed myself in the balletic art of violence known as Kung Fu. I found the clip above at The Slums of Shaolin, where the proprietor gives a rundown on 36th Chamber of Shaolin director Lau Kar Leung’s incredible heritage. The clip is a straightforward, no frills look at various techniques from a man who spent his entire life as an ambassador for the martial arts.

I don’t know if this would be quite as useful from an animator’s perspective, but has you seen Bruce Lee’s screen test?

Oh, it won’t let me embed.

Thanks, Grant. I think I may have seen a portion of that in Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey. It’s great catching the whole thing. If you haven’t seen Warrior’s Journey, I highly recommend it. It’s a documentary that centres on Lee’s martial arts to the exclusion of every other aspect of his life.

Everything is useful to me as an animator. I just enjoy observing how people move. I’ve only rarely been able to directly use martial arts in my animation (once I had to animate an attack using two swords), but it’s always good to see just how far you can push a human being.
